What your scan is like
No compression, no radiation, no injections. Here is what to expect from arrival to results, and the guidelines to review before you book.
During the scan
- 1You lie comfortably face down on a specially designed scanning table.
- 2One breast is gently positioned in a warm water bath opening beneath the table.
- 3A scanning ring rotates around the breast, transmitting and receiving sound waves.
- 4Thousands of data points are collected to build detailed 3D images of the tissue.
- 5The process is then repeated for the other breast.
Many women avoid or delay breast imaging because of discomfort, anxiety, or concerns about radiation. The warm water bath and relaxed positioning are designed to make the scan gentler, so you can simply lie comfortably while the imaging information is gathered.
How to prepare
- Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing.
- No fasting or special preparation is needed.
- No doctor’s referral is required to schedule.
- Plan for about an hour for your appointment.

Positioning & mobility
- We can accommodate patients up to 400 lbs (scanning-table specification).
- You must be able to independently walk up two steps to the elevated table.
- The exam requires lying flat on your stomach for about 11 minutes per side.
Equipment fit
- The imaging water bath accommodates breast sizes up to a DDD cup. Sizes beyond DDD cannot currently be fully imaged.
Medical devices & sensitivities
- Patients with cardiac pacemakers or implanted electronic devices cannot undergo the scan.
- The water bath is purified with standard sanitation; patients with a chlorine allergy or severe sensitivity should not be scanned.
- Small skin markers use medical adhesive — tell us about adhesive or tape allergies.
- If you are pregnant, or have nipple discharge, sores, or cuts, please call us before booking.
